Music and math are highly intertwined. By understanding beat, rhythm, and scales, children are learning how to divide, create fractions, and recognize patterns…

A 2006 study showed a positive correlation between music lessons and IQ in 6-11 year olds, concluding that taking music lessons as a child predicts both academic performance and IQ in young adulthood.

A study by E. Glenn Schellenberg at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, as published in a 2004 issue of Psychological Science, found a small increase in the IQs of six-year-olds who were given weekly voice and piano lessons.

 All types of singing have positive psychological effects. The act of singing releases endorphins, the brain’s “feel good” chemicals. Singing in front of a crowd, a la karaoke, naturally builds confidence, which has broad and long-lasting effects on general well-being.

 There are many benefits to playing the piano. Personal fulfillment, entertainment, social interaction, cognitive improvement, mental and physical therapy, meditation—just to name a few.
